Supporting Communication and Daily Function After Brain Injury
Caregiver Training Module
Individuals living with brain injury often experience communication, cognitive, and executive functioning challenges that affect everyday activities such as conversations, decision-making, planning, and social participation. Caregivers frequently play a critical role in supporting these daily interactions but may not always have access to practical strategies that make communication easier and reduce frustration.
This 90-minute training is designed to provide practical, research-informed strategies caregivers can immediately apply in everyday life, focusing on real-world communication and cognitive support.
By the end of this session, caregivers will:
- 1Understand common communication and cognitive changes after brain injury
- 2Recognize how aphasia affects everyday conversations
- 3Learn practical communication strategies that support understanding and expression
- 4Understand how executive functioning challenges affect daily life
- 5Gain tools to support independence, participation, and confidence

Additional Areas of Support
Prospective Memory and "Walking Through the Day"
Prospective memory — remembering to carry out future actions — is commonly disrupted following brain injury. Caregivers will learn strategies to support daily planning and task completion.
- "Walking through the day" together each morning
- Previewing upcoming tasks and activities
- Using calendars, reminders, and visual schedules
- Creating predictable routines
Metacognition and Self-Awareness
Recovery from brain injury often involves rebuilding metacognitive awareness — the ability to reflect on one's own thinking and behavior.
- Encouraging reflection on daily experiences
- Conversations about what went well during the day
- Identifying strategies that helped
- Building awareness of individual strengths and challenges
Journaling and Event Recording
Journaling is a simple but powerful strategy supporting both memory and self-awareness. Even brief daily entries can significantly support cognitive organization.
- Recording events of the day
- Writing down important conversations
- Noting upcoming plans
- Reflecting briefly on successes or challenges
Caregiver Well-Being and Self-Care
Supporting someone with brain injury can be emotionally demanding. Healthy caregivers are better able to provide consistent and compassionate support.
- Taking time for personal mental health
- Seeking support when needed
- Creating small moments of rest and restoration
- Recognizing that caregiver well-being supports recovery
Participants will leave with:
- Practical communication strategies
- Tools for supporting executive functioning
- Increased confidence supporting communication
- A better understanding of brain injury challenges
- Brief educational presentation
- Practical real-world examples
- Caregiver discussion
- Real-life scenario problem-solving
- In-person
- Hybrid
- Virtual
The training can be expanded to include:
- Staff communication partner training
